         The Western Xia Mausoleum is the royal mausoleum of the Western Xia Dynasty, located in the middle of eastern Helan Mountain 35 km west from Yinchuan. Nine emperors’ mausoleums are orderly arranged dotted with 271 accompanied tombs. It is one of the biggest emperor mausoleums with its ground site in integrity in China. It is called the Eastern Pyramid and mysterious wonder as a key Cultural Relic Unit under National Protection, a national key scenic site and a national AAAA grade scenic spot; it entered the tentative list for World Cultural Heritage of China in 2002.
         The Western Xia was a multi-ethnic country mainly composed by the Tangut Qing people. It existed 190 years undergoing 10 emperors from the founding by Yuan Hao in 1038 to the extinction by Mongolia in 1227. Its territory peaked 830 thousand sq.km stretched to the head of the Yellow River on the east, bordered Yumen Pass on the west, joined Xiaoguan Pass on the south, controlled the most part of the desert on the north.
         It covered the northern part of Shaanxi province, western part of Inner Mongolia, eastern part of Qinhai Province, most of Ningxia and Gansu Province, a small area of Xinjiang and the southern part of the Republic of Mongolia. It shared power with the Northern Song Dynasty and the Liao Kingdom in its early stage, and formed a situation of tripartite confrontation with the Southern Song Dynasty and the Jin Kingdom in its middle and later stage. It is described as “taking one third of land under heaven and dominated the northwest for two centuries. The Western Xia Kingdom made positive contributions to economy, culture, the multinational fusion as well as the local unification in the western part of China.
        The mysterious Western Xia Mausoleum has become the most charming and attractive tourist resort for people who want to have a taste of Western Xia culture and mystery. Since its discovery by the archaeologists in the 1970s, it has caused much attention from scholars and tourists. Especially after the No.3 Mausoleum was retrieved from destruction in1999,a large amount of precious building elements of Western Xia period were unearthed, which gradually revealed the construction institution of the Western Xia Mausoleum. In 2000, the exhibition of Western Xia Museum was evaluated one of the ten boutique exhibitions of cultural relics in China.
        For years we have insisted on the policy that priority is given to protection and rescue works followed by rational use and enhancing management. The relic sites of the mausoleum and the authenticity of natural environment around have been well reserved.
        We have been stick to the scientific development and planning first. A series of plans have been made such as The Protection Plan of Western Xia Mausoleum of Yinchuan, the General Plan of Western Xia Mausoleum Scenic Spot, The Plan of Western Xia Mausoleum Archaeological Site Park. Recently we have started the modification of The Tourism Development Plan of Western Xia Mausoleum. These plans keep us make steady progress on the way of protection and development. We have reinforced No.1,NO.2,bNO.3,NO.4,NO.6 and NO.93 accompanied tomb, meanwhile, the security system for the whole protection area has been constructed. We make propaganda, advertisements at the buses, trains, airports and so on. We have cooperated with websites like City network, Ctrip.com, Qunar.com, lvmama.com, etc. we have made promotions in Beijing,Sanghai,Hongkong,Taiwai, Xiameng, Nanjing, Chengdu, Xi’an and other cities. Though it is in the northwest of China, the number of tourists has been rising year by year, from less than10 thousand in 2000 to nearly 60 thousand last year.
        As the development of the scenic spot, it was arranged on the first tentative list for Natural and Cultural Heritage of China by the MOC in 2006. Supported by the Ningxia government and the Yinchuan government, we have launched the project of constructing the National Archaeological Site Park and applying for the World Cultural Heritage. At present, we have completed the most part of the environmental renovation in the scenic spot. The new Western Xia Museum has been designed and it has come to the construction stage and hoped to be completed this year. All the associated programs of applying for World Cultural Heritage have been undergone in order. With the strong support and concern from the Ningxia government and the Party Committee of Yinchuan, we are confident of the success of the application for World Cultural Heritage in 2018.  At that time, the Western Xia Mausoleum will be opened to the tourists at home and abroad in a brand new view. A brief introduction to the Western Xia Mausoleum scenic spot
        The Western Xia Mausoleum is the Mausoleum of Western Xia emperors and is also one of the biggest emperor mausoleums with its ground site in integrity in China. It was announced as a key Cultural Relic Unit under National Protection and a national key scenic site by the State Council in 1988. It was arranged on the first tentative list for Natural and Cultural Heritage of China by the MOC in 2006. It entered the tentative list for the National Archaeological Site Park by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 2013.
        The Western Xia Mausoleum is located in the eastern Helan Mountain, 5km wide from east to west, 10km long from north to south. Nine emperors’ mausoleums are orderly arranged dotted with 271 accompanied tombs which belong to the royal families or heroes in an area about 42.8 sqkm. The tower-shaped Mausoleum Platforms are high as hills stretched along the foot of the Helan Mountain and splendid shining in the sunlight. The buildings on the ground of the mausoleum include corner platforms, tower platforms, tablet pavilions, moon town, the mausoleum town, the sacrifice hall, the tower-shaped mausoleum and other units. The trapezoid- shaped layout is symmetrically distributed on the east and west according to the north -south central axis. It is the extraordinary Western Xia style in China’s mausoleums.
         The Western Xia Museum shows the history of Western Xia Kingdom truly and vividly, it is the first museum which takes the Western Xia royal mausoleum as its background. The museum takes up 5,300 sqm built in a Western Xia style. It has vigor of modern architecture as well as the unique ethnic architectural style echoed the sites of the mausoleum. There are 671 pieces of selected typical cultural relics and 413 articles of monographs, essays or magazine articles exhibited in the museum, such as the dragon-carving railing column, the stone horse, the colored glazed Chiwen, the stone-carving men tablet pedestals, the broken stone tablet in Western Xia characters, the silk painting Thangka, the Western Xia porcelains, the official seals, the replica of Grand Buddha Pagoda as 6:1 made on a scale 1:6. There are 8 selected copy pieces of Western Xia Murals which reveal the essence of Western Xia grottoes and let the people today appreciate the former glory and magnificence of the Western Xia Kingdom.
       To give a better understanding of Western Xia history and cultural to the visitors at home and abroad, we have developed No.3 Mausoleum as the center of the tourist area as well as we have enhanced the protection of the cultural relics. We have built the Western Xia Museum, the Western Xia Art Gallery, the Western Xia Stele Forest, opened the visiting route of No.1, No.2 Mausoleum which can show the deep historical knowledge of Western Xia Kingdom and become an important scenic spot for people to explore the mystery of the Western Xia Kingdom. The unique cultural relics different from those in central China and its attractive fascination have won itself the reputation of the Oriental Pyramids and the Mysterious Wonders.
